Guide 01

Which console?

Two decisions actually matter: whether you need a disc drive, and how much space you want before you start deleting things. No install size and no per-console performance figure has been published — any guide that gives you one is guessing.

What that means

Some links here are affiliate links to retailers including Amazon: if you buy after following one, Wanted Wire may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It never changes what we recommend or what a specification says.

Every model, side by side

Compare the main options at a glance: how the models line up on storage, disc drive and expansion, read from each manufacturer's own product page on 18 September 2026.

Nothing here earns us a commission. No affiliate programme is connected. Every link is an ordinary link to the manufacturer or retailer and earns Wanted Wire nothing. Product links, comparisons and specifications do not depend on that ever changing.

Who each one suits

A closer look at each model, with the points that actually decide it.

PlayStation 5

Sony

All specifications and caveats

Storage: 1TB SSD
Disc drive: Yes, on the disc model
Expansion: M.2 SSD slot (drive sold separately)

SuitsAnyone who wants the standard PlayStation 5 and expects to buy or borrow discs.

Watch outSony also sells a Digital Edition with no drive. Check which one a listing is before you buy — the two look similar in photographs.

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Sony

All specifications and caveats

Storage: 1TB SSD
Disc drive: None
Expansion: M.2 SSD slot (drive sold separately)

SuitsBuyers who only ever download, and want the cheapest way onto the platform.

Watch outNo disc drive at all, so a physical Grand Theft Auto VI code-in-box is the only physical route — and that is a download code, not a disc.

PlayStation 5 Pro

Sony

All specifications and caveats

Storage: 2TB SSD
Disc drive: Not built in — sold separately
Expansion: M.2 SSD slot (drive sold separately)

SuitsPlayers who want the largest built-in drive in the PlayStation 5 range and do not want to manage installs.

Watch outSony has published no Grand Theft Auto VI performance figure for any console, and neither do we. The Pro's advantage here is storage you can measure, not a frame rate anybody has stated.

Xbox Series S — 1TB All-Digital

Microsoft

All specifications and caveats

Storage: 1TB SSD
Disc drive: None
